Desperate Liberation

copyright-David Stewart

It was a bad omen. First, the day of Mi-Cha’s surgery, her ride never showed, which meant walking through the city streets and crossing over the chilly town square and pass, reluctantly, by that new sculpture. Not only was its form hideous, but worse, Mi-Cha sensed her entire being pulled into the truth of her own despair.

Her youthful beauty was quickly fading.

Despite serious warnings, Mi-Cha wanted liberation from both aging and her Asian features. Unfortunately, Mi-Cha and several other women received serious deformity after their blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery and Botox treatments.

The con artist cleverly eluded arrest.

a simple story for Mother’s Day: Sarah’s Specialty Shop

Beauty is but a flower

Which wrinkles will devour.

~Thomas Nashe

Sarah reflected onto a time, when in her youth, her beauty captivated many folks, in the small town where she lived with her mother, just north of the Hollow Ridge Bridge. Many thought she had what it took to grace the covers of the latest fashion magazines, and many would urge her mother to seek fortune and fame for her daughter.

Sarah’s mother, however, was wise and she knew the burden that can come with youthful physical beauty. She saw how quickly her own beauty faded in time and how her looks became like that of the dull shadows that eventually covers over on an old faded mirror.

Disregarding countless beauty pageant entries and mindless photo shoots to fill her young daughter’s modeling portfolio, Sarah’s mother, instead,  opened a ‘shop’  in her daughter’s mind.

This specialty shop began small and simple.

As far back as she can remember, Sarah watched her mother on many occasions, sitting with frail old Miss Taylor in the sun room of the Dragonfly Nursing Home. It had the same familiar old folk’s home smell and the drab furniture sparsely scattered around the room.

Sarah sat alongside mother.

The only inventory mother would stock were a handful of classic read-aloud books.

Miss Taylor, to the very young Sarah, looked to be at least ninety years old, but, when mother read aloud from the classic book, David Copperfield, every wrinkle seemed to disappear from Miss Taylor’s face and the room became magically lit and transformed.

As mother’s soothing voice slowly read over Mr. Copperfield’s  words, a smile beamed across the almost blind Miss Taylor’s aged face:

“My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest.”

This smile appeared every time Miss Taylor heard those words and young Sarah, unknowingly, kept every smile locked in her heart.

Sarah found peace from the happiness that radiated from Miss Taylor’s being; and Sarah’s mother knew her daughter was receiving the secret foundation to eternal beauty and the key to success for her specialty shop.

Nothing any store-bought makeup would match so perfectly.

This foundation went beyond skin deep and covered any imperfections Sarah’s physical body would endure with aging.

Both Sarah’s mom and Miss Taylor have long left this world and the specialty shop operates with boundless energy and life. The Dragonfly Nursing Home residents are kept captivated, not so much with Sarah’s fading outer beauty, but with the golden glimmer of her radiant inner essence.

The funny thing is, when Sarah tries to read aloud from more recent novels, David Copperfield is still a favorite read-aloud story among her clients.

Go figure.

In honor of her mother’s birthday and every Mother’s Day, Sarah lovingly places a golden-yellow rose flower on top her mother’s grave.

If you listen closely, you may catch her whispering, ”thank you, Mama, for wisely opening the specialty shop within me so long ago, and teaching me that the path to true happiness and true beauty comes by giving away the simple gifts in life.

Miss Taylor’s memories are living happily over at the Dragonfly Nursing Home.

When grace is joined with wrinkles, it is adorable. There is an unspeakable dawn in happy old age. ~Victor Hugo

Blessings to all mothers everywhere who teach their children valuable life lessons on the spirit of devoted giving and doing well with all their hearts.

Spellbound & Divine . . .

Oh-la-la! We just depleted our savings buying all this make-up but we sure look good!! photosource: 4.bp.blogspot.com

Okay, I attended a home-based make-up party the other night. For those of you not familiar with home-based make-up parties, a persistent sales person comes to your home, business lunch room, church or anyplace that provides very little distractions for about two hours and attempts to sell you their  ”exclusive” and wonderful beauty products.

If you are lucky, your salesperson will keep you spellbound as you experience not only a new lip color but every sales pitch to get you to buy glamour at any price!

You would be proud of me because I kept to my budget and didn’t buy a single thing! Not yet anyway. I booked a party instead and for two good reasons. I think you would agree.

1. The hostess, that’s gonna be me, will receive something like $70 worth of beauty products for around $30. Not bad right? I mean, it’s a nice thought that one can look and feel fantastic without the guilt trip.

My guilty troll’s constant rant: “What?? You’re gonna spend most of the money in our savings account for one, oh, so lush and thick mascara, one, oh, so smooth and light foundation and one, oh, so shiny lip gloss, that once applied, could land you a model photo shoot and bring you fame-and-fortune but more than likely, blind every person around you??”

I covered up my troll with fine dusting powder–to minimize its wrinkles– and signed up to host a party.

2, The other reason, and it’s the main one,  my work friend, LC, who was hosting the party I was attending,  wanted the “free” (nothing is free with this type of party!) gift–a fancy make-up organizer but, to receive it,  she needed to sign two friends to host their own party. Uh-huh, this proves–for you young’ns still learning about the ways and wonders of this world–nothing in life is free!

I signed up and told LC, happy birthday. It was really her birthday!

Before I go any further, please, don’t misunderstand me. I love most of the home-base beauty products, but not the high prices! I think a small bottle of foundation hovered around $16 or $18! I guess you pay for what you get? Ouch!

That brings me to the point of my discussion here. The party demonstrator asked us ladies, what three items would most people lay down money to buy, even when times are bad and/or finances are tight. Researchers claim these are three things we cannot seem to be without:

alcohol

tobacco

 lip balm/lipstick/lip gloss

Um, I know I could live without the first two items but life would slow down to a snail’s pace if you asked me to put the two luscious lipstick back on the shelf as we wait at the check out counter. How do you expect me to go on with life, when, the two latest shade of lip colors called Spellbound and Divine, once applied to my eagerly puckered lips, instantly drops a rush of energy and the I-can-conquer-the-world attitude searing through my head down to my charming toes? How?

So, now you know what I will be grabbing for if ever there is an emergency evacuation situation in my little world.

Yep, tossed into the evacuation must-take-bag would be family members and friends, who happen to be hanging around with me at that moment, and my bag of make-up, especially my two new lip friends, Spellbound and Divine!

No, guilty troll is not included in this must-take mix. Thank you.

So, what would be your important, yet totally trivial thing(s) to grab for if ever caught in an evacuation situation?

My Hometown Is Out of This World!

Many years have passed,

traveling with familiar faces

but distant shadows hide the real soul–

Where is the road that will lead me home?

One day I ran into darkness whom accompanied me through my

desolate journey.

Collecting remnants of tears–

the wind blew fiercely

secrets

against my face.

Reaching for the sun

I became aware . . .

my face

my soul

my whole being belonged to someone else

but who?

Where is the road that will lead me home?

Beauty surrounds me everywhere and in every corner

and the wonder of it all is . . .

my home

and my eternity

all

began at my very first breath.

The road that leads up to my hometown is

simply the path I am on . . .

nothing changes after the last breath.
