SUNDAY POST : Toys

This week on Jakesprinter’s  SUNDAY POST, the topic is on Toys… photograph, toy, brain, educational toy

We can fill a child’s world with many, many fancy toys, electronic games and gadgets, but the one toy that seems neglected, especially in the traditional sense, is the storybook.

If more children had as many books as part of their “toy” collection as their huge assortment of random plastic toys, and these books read aloud to them everyday, perhaps fewer developmental speech delays would occur in young children.

I work with nursery age children. Occasionally we have children between the ages 2-4 who come to the nursery and speak gibberish. Seriously.

They look at you and speak as if they are carrying on a sensible conversation. One boy actually got upset when I tried to correct some of the words I thought he mispronounced. What!?!

Further, you know I always ask the parent(s) whose child communicates in the gibberish dialect the one big question. (I know the answer before they speak it out loud.)

Me: “Do you read aloud to your child everyday?”

Parent: “No.”

There you go. I am no expert in anything and more so when it comes to language and communication skills development in very young children, but my instincts do tell me that reading aloud everyday to a young child must help boost the ability to speak coherently.book, reading, literacy, toys, photograph

I think surrounding your young child with great story and picture books, in addition to reading aloud from these books are perfect educational toys.

Now, I did come across one parent who admitted she did not know how to read herself. At least she admitted it. In cases like this, I would at least seek out, if available, either a public library read aloud program for young children or perhaps finding a teen willing to either volunteer (as a community project) or be paid a small sum to read aloud to children whose parents cannot read.

Finally, I say, reach out, especially if you have young children in your care and give the very best educational toy to children everywhere…the brain…nourish it with good books and read aloud time. That way you can be sure the brain can avoid speaking in the gibberish dialect.

That is all. My rant over gibberish dialect is over. Thank you.

What educational toys do you suggest as tools to help develop coherent speech patterns in young children?

Life is Sweet…Life is Short…

sweet life, book, losel, postaday

Life is sweet when you go into a bookstore and come out with two plastic bags filled with books you always wanted to read or reread and the cost for these treasures–mere pennies!

Well, the pennies really amounted to around 70 US dollars, but who will argue that books, especially if the collection includes several classic novels and a book written by award-winning writer, Julia Cameron and Natalie Goldberg, are one of life’s sweetest joys and a very worthy investment!

Not only are books entertaining, but a fantastic way to increase your knowledge about words. Anu Garg’s book, “Another Word a Day,” will have you, as the author writes “…romp(ing) through some of the most unusual and intriguing words in English.”

For example, we often spend our days allowing others to influence our thoughts, thus, our attitudes reflect the energy we receive from them, and, unfortunately, some people, if encouraged, are good at making us feel like a ragged losel.

*Losel: (noun) a worthless person, good-for-nothing, despicable person

By the way, book collecting also means taking the time to read the books we stack onto our shelves. I know an avid book collector who spends far more money than me putting books upon books onto her (many) library shelves, but spends very little time reading them. Strange, I know, but I keep my mouth sealed. She means well.

“It is difficult to make a man miserable while he feels worthy of himself and claims kindred to the great God who made him.” ~Abraham Lincoln

Life is short. If we describe ourselves as a sad losel, then, we must make our way back to a source of wisdom, the Sacred Scriptures and reflect for a moment on Genesis 1:27:

…God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.

We reflect God’s image and there is no room for being a losel!

If you afflicted with the losel image, go over to a mirror and simply smile… at His image! Oh, beautiful One!

Finally, remember, we are worth more than any precious artwork…“For we are God’s masterpiece.” –Ephesians 2:10

Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth–Young Readers

Throughout a child’s early life , we measure and compare other children to each other using both the height and weight growth charts. Monitoring physical growth is important but so is the ability to read the written word.

Reading is a key to future success.

In order to grow into the habit of being a passionate reader, good examples early in life can help make lifelong passionate readers.

A few examples if you directly have influence on a young child are:

1. Love to read. You are the example and you must love to read.
2. Surround them with great children books and that way you can pass on your enthusiasm.
3. Read aloud often. The written word becomes alive as you read aloud.

Other examples that help the growth of a reader is, if available, visiting the public libraries, going to used book sales and visiting bookstores in your area.

Therefore, we measure the growth of child in many areas, but an important area that helps to bring future success a bit easier for a child is the ability to read well. We should measure the growth of this ability with as much enthusiasm as we do a child’s height and weight.

Do you believe the growth of a young reader is as important as a child’s height and weight?

GO…
Here are the three books I hope to finish reading soon, one for sure since it is a daily prayer booklet and if I do not finish it–shame on me!

here, books, 5 minute Friday, hope,life,free writing,challenges

be here now…

Here on a comfortable spot I begin the journey, page after page, my mind flows over so much wisdom. Julia Cameron comes first with the words to encourage the use of the morning pages–it is free writing on anything and it should fill up three and a half pages.

Here I have all the intentions to read. It is here I want to grab a few laughs with the book, 50 Funniest American Writers, practice the art of writing with, The Right to Write and of course, my morning coffee and prayers with, Give Us This Day and my last goodnight prayers with, Give Us This Day.

Life here seems so short and I feel time must be used wisely.

So, here are the current three reading materials, filled with so much wisdom…Here all waiting for me to open the pages and begin the journey–
To learn
To laugh
To grow in God’s goodness and grace…
Here I begin to read a chapter or two, but it takes only a short time before my eyes decide, it is time to sleep…Stop

Here I want to complete three reading materials soon and what do hope to finish, soon?
